Angel Veron died today, October 19, 2015, in the intensive care unit of Perrando Hospital. Angel’s peers, comrades of the social movement that he integrated, (Movimiento de Trabajadores Desocupados – “No al desalojo” —Movement of Unemployed Workers – ‘No to Eviction’), said he died “despite the human and political perversity of the government that ordered to keep him artificially alive at least until the presidential elections have passed”.
Marcelino Leiva said that “Jorge Capitanich’s provincial government and its repressive police murdered Angel Veron for demanding the fulfillment of the electoral promises on housing and work”. Leiva’s communication ends by pointing out: “Comrade Verón; your struggle and your death will not be in vain. We demand trial and punishment of your murderers”.
The crackdown took place in the National Route No. 11, at 18 hours on Thursday, 24 September. A “manhunt against members of the MTD” broke. The leader Angel Verón was detained among others, and was victim of a savage beating.
According to the organization Patria Grande, repression was carried out “during a partial blocking of the road done by a fellow social movement; about twenty families, including children and women, who demanded the mediation of the provincial government to fulfill commitments regarding the provision of funding and tools to enable them to continue the building of houses in a small field located a side of Route 11”.
They noted that “without the arrival of any official or mediator of Jorge Capitanich’s government to the place of protest, members of the organization decided to partially block the route, where a dozen patrol cars belonging to the 4th Police Station, Marine Police, and a Hydrant truck, immediately showed up to intimidate those who were protesting. Faced with this situation of tension, the movement decided to end the blocking and return to a field that was several meters away. But when they were leaving, the police brutally advanced towards the people and and unleashed a manhunt”.
They denounced that “the persecution lasted several hours, and in the darkness, police shot at close range with live ammunition against the people who were trying to escape from the assault. We suspect that the order of the Secretary for Security, Marcelo Churín, probably with the consent of the governor of the province, was to go after the leaders of the organization. This happened when the police caught Ángel Verón and his brother Rogelio Verón, who were kicked and beaten with sticks right there and then dragged to the Command truck. From the time of arrest, the family lost complete contact with the brothers”. As there was no answer at the police station, they waited until Friday morning, when, with the accompaniment of the organizations “Patria Grande” and MTD Federal, they held a demonstration outside the Criminal Court Building, where they made a complaint and were able to trace the location of Ángel Veron, while his brother was still missing.
“In the Perrando Hospital, the wife of Ángel entered the room where he was hospitalized, and verified that he had serious stomach wounds” and, as a doctor told them, the man entered the hospital “faded and with the guts out” as a result of the heavy blows he received, that caused him a deep wound. Veron was surrounded by police in the hospital under an alleged arrest warrant.
