As reported by the Venezuelan right-wing daily El Nacional, Argentine candidate to the presidency, Mauricio Macri, promises to come to the Venezuelan coup leader’s rescue. “We will demand the release of Leopoldo López, and if this is not accepted by Maduro, we will bring together the democratic countries of Mercosur to ask for the application of the democratic clause” said Macri.

Mauricio Macri, conservative candidate for the presidential coalition of Argentina, called “Let’s Change”, said today that, in case of reaching the Pink House, will ask for the intervention of Mercosur in order to call Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to release the opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez .

“We will demand the release of Leopoldo López, and if this is not accepted by Maduro we will bring together the democratic countries of Mercosur to ask for the application of the democratic clause” Macri said in a meeting with foreign correspondents in Buenos Aires City.

“Maduro and his government will have to respect the freedoms and rights of the opposition” he added.

Mercosur is composed of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Venezuela, and the democratic clause provides the possibility to suspend a partner country in the bloc and to apply trade sanctions or closure of borders in the event of interruption of the democratic order.
