The Cuban Movement for Peace will demand the shutting down of the US naval base located in the eastern province of Guantanamo, Cuba, and the return of this illegally occupied territory during an international meeting that will bring together more than 200 peace activists from all over the planet, and it will be held near the US military enclave.

Guantanamo, the oldest US base on foreign soil, is ‘the most inhuman and cruel center of torture in the world’ and is existence represents a ‘violation’ of the original 1903 treaty,  therefore Cuba will not fail to demand its return, said Silvio Platero, President of the Cuban Movement for Peace, to the press on Thursday.

This NGO is the promoter of the Fourth International Seminar on Peace and for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases, scheduled from November 23 to 25 in the city of Guantanamo, located 30 kilometers from Caimanera, where the US base is located.

‘Pacifists from Japan, USA, Turkey, Switzerland, Canada, the president of the World Peace Council and other friends of the world will come to support us on this fair demand’, stated the activist.

The representative announced that, among the personalities that are expected to attend the meeting, are the President of the World Peace Council —Socorro Gomes—, the President of the American Council for Peace —Alfred Mardher— and US peace activist Cindy Sheehan, mother of a soldier who died in the Iraq War.
