The Socialist Regroupment for a New National Initiative Party (RASIN) sends its solidarity to all victims of Hurricane Matthew in the four corners of the country.

The RASIN party deeply regrets each and every one of the deaths of our compatriots due to Hurricane Matthew. Our most sincere condolences to the families of the victims.

The party still doesn’t have a complete report on the damages. But according to the available information, the hurricane caused severe damage in departments located in the following departments: South, Southeast, Nippes and Great Anse, and has affected several other parts of the country, such as the West and Artibonite. There are hundreds of deaths, tens of thousands of affected families, thousands of torn-down homes, schools and public buildings many thousands of dead animals and devastated fields. In some fields, not a single banana tree is still standing.

That means that in the weeks and months to come the entire country will suffer even more hunger. The population was already living a hard life. We’re in a country where the bourgeoisie often decides to raise the price of products by 100, 200 or 300% whenever they want. So they will probably take advantage of this crisis to increase their earnings. Because, as we all know, the neoliberal Bible forbids the State to control prices of products in the market!

These disasters are opportunities for the authorities and the dominant class to get rich at the expense of the victims. They have already done this before, when Hurricane Sandy hit the country on October 24, 2012. Then, the government of Martelly and Lamothe embezzled over 197 million dollars that were destined to the victims. This is a common practice of disaster capitalism —a situation where capitalists take advantage of a weakened country to increase oppression, strengthen the dependency and seize control of strategic areas.

Therefore, the Party demands the government of Jocelerme Privert and Jean Charles to take every measure necessary so that the help reaches the victims. The government must place controls on the prices of essential products and immediately set up programs to help farms, with subsidies and technical assistance, in order to help the peasants to recover at least a part of their losses and begin a new season.

The RASIN party calls all of its members in the 10 departments of the country to do everything in their hands to bring solidarity to the people that have suffered due to Hurricane Matthew.

The affected communities must also mobilize to demand that the emergency aid reaches them as it’s supposed to. The victims must mobilize to force the government to assist them.
