ALBA Movements rejects the offensive of landowners against our brothers and sisters of the Landless Rural Workers Movement in Pará in the north of Brazil, who fight for the land and for an agrarian reform.

We are very concerned about the escalade of the violence generated by the government, which is fomented by hitmen and complicity of the mass media, against organized communities and social movements. In our minds and our hearts we remember the massacre of Eldorado de los Carajás in the same state, when just over 20 years ago the police forces killed more than 20 landless workers. We must not forget!

In the state of Pará they have threatened more than 20 encampment areas, which contain more than 2,000 families. The MST has already evicted one area and there were plans to evict two more. The “Hugo Chávez” encampment of the MST was one of them. It had been designated for eviction this Wednesday December 13, however on Monday December 11, the encampment was attacked by hitmen with live ammunition. Although they had decided to leave the area peacefully, now the families decided to stay and fight until the last consequences.

As ALBA Social Movements we stand in solidarity and manifest our total support with the comrades from the “Hugo Chávez” encampment and the whole Landless Rural Workers Movement.

We demand an end to the violence and that the guarantees and physical integrity of the people there are respected, for the government to be accountable for their security and not add to these acts of violence. Now more than ever, faced with Temer’s putschist, right-wing and repressive government, the struggle of MST to confront this terrible situation is desperate, and as such we need internationalist and working class solidarity.

Let us join our force, so that they can hear our voices!

Long live the just struggle of the MST for people’s agrarian reform!

Long live the solidarity between our people!
