Academics and international human rights activists launched a petition calling upon world powers to act against Turkish aggression against Afrin.

The petition, signed by academics and activists like Noam Chomsky, Michael Hardt and Debbi Bookchin, called for prevention of further Turkish attacks on Afrin.

The full text of the petition reads as follows:

“We, the undersigned academics and human rights activists, insist that the leaders of Russia, Iran, and the U.S. ensure that the sovereignty of Syrian borders is not breached by Turkey and that the people of Afrin in Syria, be allowed to live in peace.

Afrin, whose population is predominantly Kurdish, is one of the most stable and secure regions in Syria. With very little international aid, Afrin has taken in so many Syrian refugees in the last five years that its population has doubled to 400,000. Afrin is now surrounded by enemies: Turkish-supported jihadi groups, al Qaeda, and Turkey.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened to attack the U.S. military’s Kurdish partners – the Kurdish YPG or People’s Protection Units – with which the US has been allied against ISIS. Turkey accuses the YPG of being “terrorists” despite the YPG’s long track record of setting up local democratic governing councils in each of the towns it has liberated from ISIS and its repeated statements that it has no interest in Turkey and wishes to function only as a defense force for Syrian Kurds and other ethnicities living in the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria (DFNS), also known as “Rojava,” which includes Afrin.

Turkey has massed an enormous military force on the Afrin border and President Erdogan has promised to attack the Kurdish-controlled canton with full force, annihilating a peaceful enclave, and putting thousands of civilians and refugees at risk, all in pursuit of its vendetta against the Kurds.

An attack of this kind against the peaceful citizens of Afrin is a blatant act of aggression against a peaceful and democratically-governed region and population. Turkey cannot carry out such an attack without the approval of Russia, Iran and Syria – and inaction by the U.S. to stop it. The Kurdish people have endured the loss of thousands of young men and women who joined the YPG, and YPJ women’s force, to rid the world of ISIS. The U.S and the international community have a moral obligation to stand behind the Kurdish people now. We call on U.S. officials and the international community to guarantee Afrin’s stability and security and prevent further Turkish aggression from within Syria and across the Syrian border.

To the media and public!

In these moments right now, the fascist turkish state is attacking our people and land in Efrîn. With warplanes they are bombing cities, villages, the mountains and the valleys. For a long time the beginning of fightings in Efrîn has been a main topic, and now it became true. We as the Youth Union of Rojava allways made our stand clear to defend our people and our land is our priority. For this reason we call for a general mobilisation. Everybody who feels what is happening and with honor in hie or her heart, with courage and belief needs to take a weapon and join the forces that are defending Rojava. Talking is over, they want war, we are going to give them war. Rojava is going to be the grave of Erdoğan and Bahçeli.

If everyone remembers, during Kobanê Erdoğan was screaming every day: „Kobanê is going to fall today, is going to fall tomorrow.“ That’s what he said, but with the brave resistance of thousands of martyres Kobanê did not fall but became the symbol for the free will of the people. Look wher we are today. The peoples of Northern Syria are standing together and with our common struggle, as Arabs, Kurds, Syriacs, Ermens and Tirkmens we did not only defend ourself, but we destroyed the Islamic State, their capital was liberated with the afford and blood of hundreds of freedom-fighters. Like this the sisterhood of the people and a democratic Syria became a guarantee. Today they are having dirty plans again. Erdoğan wants to take action this winter before it gets spring, because this spring is going to be the spring of the defeat of the turkish fascism. It is going to be the peoples revolution-spring.

The Turkish-state existence on our soil is not at all legitimate and like the yout of northern Syria we will never except it. They have to know that Kobanê was the beginning of the downfall of DAÎŞ, the same way Efrîn will be the beginning of Erdoğans end. We will make the whole border a war-zone against occupation. That’s why we call on all revolutionary and democratic youth of the world to rise up against Turkish-state fascism. We especially call on the revolutionary and democratic youth in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan to rise up against the AKP-MHP dictatorship. We call on the youth of Rojava and Northern Syria to join the defence forces, join YPG and YPJ, against turkish occupation rise up! Where ever you are, go to the streets!

Long live the Efrin resistance!
Long live Rêber APO!
Rise Up! Rise Up! Rise Up!
