Gabriel Muñoz, activist and campaigner with the presidential campaign of Gustavo Petro in the town of La Argentina (Huila) was assassinated on the night of May 26th in town Las Águilas, 20 minutes away from where he lived.

The crime took place when armed men shot several times at the leader and electoral representative of the committee of Colombia Humana in La Argentina.

Gabriel was a peasant leader who had been denouncing alleged facts of corruption in school feeding in his community. He was also a defender of territory and water; was a member of Vemos Todo, a process of citizen oversight with high social commitment. He was to serve as a delegate to table 23 of his town for the presidential elections, representing the coalition of Colombia Humana.

Many took to social media to denounce the killing. Carolina Tejada said on Twitter “We strongly reject and lament this act and demand justice”. Like her, hundreds of Colombians were outraged at what they called a political genocide.

The leader of Colombia Humana and presidential candidate Gustavo Petro, wrote on his twitter account that “Our response is the politics of love. Only those who are corrupt must fear our government”.

The alternative news agency, Colombia Informa, sympathizes with the relatives of Gabriel Muñoz and they demand that the state carries out a thorough investigation to find the physical and intellectual authors of this crime.
