It’s more commonly referred to by its acronym MORENA:
In Mexico where the National Regeneration Movement was founded the party is known as Movimiento Regeneracion Nacional as Spanish is the official language in Mexico. In Mexico the political party is most commonly referred to by its acronym MORENA.
It was founded back in 2011:
MORENA was founded in 2011 by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. At the time Obrador wanted to form a political party which would campaign against political corruption and electoral fraud. Both of which Obrador claimed was rife. MORENA was formed as a left leaning political party and split off from an existing party which was known as the Party of the Democratic Revolution.
In 2018 MORENA successfully campaigned for the presidency of Mexico:
While when MORENA was first founded back in 2011, public opinion of MORENA was negative by 2019 MORENA managed to win over the Mexican public and in 2018 the left leaning political party successfully campaigned for the presidency of Mexico. With the party winning 53% of the popular vote, which made Morena’s founder Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador the President of Mexico.
As an added bonus the party also managed to win the majority of the political seats in the Senate and the Chamber of Secretaries. Which allowed the party to have a significant influence in both spheres.
MORENA seeks to promote business and trade:
One of MORENA’s key goals is to promote business and trade in Mexico. So that private individuals will begin to wield more power than corrupt politicians.
Although Obrador is the President of Mexico he is no longer the leader of MORENA:
You may be surprised to read that while Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is the incumbent President of Mexico, he no longer serves as the leader of his own party. As he chose to step down and allow Yeidckol Polevnsky to take over the leadership of the National Regeneration Movement in Mexico.
MORENA’s current leader previously served as a state senator:
Yeidckol Polevnsky served as Mexican state senator from 2006 until 2012 and has a lengthy career as a lifetime politician. Which made Polevnsky the perfect candidate to take over the leadership of MORENA from Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Polevnsky had a hard upbringing:
If you assumed that Polevnsky had a privileged upbringing, think again. Polevnsky came from a broken family and found herself pregnant at just 12 years of age. At which point she had no choice but to put her education on hold. However, after her mother chose to adopt Polevnsky’s son as her own, Polevnsky was able to resume her education and to pursue a career in the political sphere.
