How to Protect Your Home from High Winds

December 11, 2020 //  by Angela//  Leave a Comment

Whether you live in an area that’s windy year-round or are instead in an area often hit by hurricanes or tornadoes: wind can do a number on any home. There’s a lot to prepare for, from ripping off shingles to destroying gardens and possibly breaking windows. Luckily you don’t have to worry about all of these for long! Here are some of the top tips for any home to insure your house and yard stay in top shape.

Get Storm Windows

Despite the expense, storm rated windows are the best thing you can get for your home. You may think winds can’t do much, but the things that wind picks up could crack through a window without trouble. Save yourself the headache of a broken window, and keep your home safe by putting in the correct glass. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford these- which is why many turn to old fixes. If your home has shutters, keeping them closed over your windows will also help stave off debris and cracking.

Repair and Reshingle On Time

Our roofs get ignored, despite how much they control and protect in our lives. Able to trap in heat in the winter and keep it out in summer- we have to pay attention to our roofs in high wind areas. Losing a lot of shingles could turn a windy storm into a major leak that may destroy attic space, as well as any floors beneath it. Have your roof inspected every two to three years, and reshingle it the moment it’s necessary.

Plan Around Bad Wind

If you’re expecting a lot of lousy wind in the next day or two, take the time necessary to prepare your yard. This plan means bringing in any wheelbarrows, tools, or decor from your yard. You may love your giant metal wind chimes, but a storm could turn them into projectiles that are dangerous to both you and your home. If you have plants growing in your garden, you can find covers for them for short periods, but these aren’t good for a plant for more than a day.

Take Care of Electric Appliances

Winds are known to knock out electricity and cause power surges. Ensure your appliances are grounded and that you won’t risk losing or breaking any of them. When shopping for your home, you can also ensure your electrical setup is ready for that kind of strain; keep an eye out when looking at Nashville houses for sale.

Protect Against Air Leaks

Although there are old myths and wives’ tales that try to convince people to leave their windows and garage doors open during tornadoes: don’t fall for them! The more air-tight your home is, the more likely it will stay in one piece. Allowing wind into your home could weaken your roof’s structural support and force it to cave in.

Take the time necessary to look for air leaks in your home around all doors and windows. This intelligent work will help keep your house safe and have the long-term benefit of keeping your home’s temperature well regulated.
