For so many of us, growing up as kids we wanted to become an inventor, creating crazy and new fanged inventions which would completely revolutionize the world. At this age there is little to do with science and more to do with the thought process behind coming up with crazy ideas. As we grow up of course things do change, but there are some geniuses in this world like the brilliant Faii Ong, who do continue their studies and become inventors of life changing products.
Even if you are no longer young, this is not a reason to give up on the dream of being an inventor, and here is the mindset which you need to have in order to do it.
Based in Science
If there is one thing that all of the inventors around the world have in common, it is a foundation in the sciences. No matter whether we are talking about a chef inviting new foods, a molecular engineer synthesizing new drugs or an ocean expert inventing ways to clean up the ocean, all of these people have their roots in the sciences and this is where you need to start.
Problem Solving
There are two main reasons for inventing something and the most common of those is that the new gadget or device will solve a problem which currently exists. For example the electric car reduces the impact and the damage which is done to the environment and they are cheaper to make than traditional motors. This is an invention which haas sought to solve multiple problems. If you are thinking about inventions then this will generally start with a problem.
Improving
Problem solving is the most common reason for a new invention but it is not the only one, and often we find that inventions also come abut as a way to improve a certain issue. For example on the Joe Rogan podcast last year, he had Elon Musk on the show, one of the world’s finest inventors. Elon was discussing a plan which he had to design a plane, because of the fact that currently he felt that the planes which we have today could be greatly improved. This approach is always worth considering too, how we can improve things.
Worthwhile
There are many small problems which can be solved and many items which could be improved, but in reality they are not worth doing. The reason for this is that an invention should be brought abut in order to help people. Now you may find a way that you can improve a knife, fork or spoon, but the reality is that these items have been used for such a long time that nobody really wants an invention which allows them to butter bread better or to grab food onto a fork with more purchase.
The point is that not every new invention is actually needed, so you have to think of one which people will actively use.
