One of the best ideas which the Mexican tourism board has had in the last decade was the creation of ‘Pueblos Magicos’. This is a collection of small towns and villages throughout the country which are noted for their artisanal work and for the indigenous people who live and work there. What the qualification of PM gives them is that it drives tourism through to the villages and towns and increases local revenue. Beyond this they are offered great protections with regards to the natural environment in which they live.
There are over 100 of these Pueblos Magicos, and alongside my friend and travel companion Rose Burillo, we have managed to hit a large proportion of them. These are wonderful places and here is why you are just going to fall in love with them.
History
Almost every one of these towns has a rich history dating back centuries and learning about that history is one of the fascinating things about visiting these kinds of places. In most cases you are meeting with people who’s families have lived here for hundreds of years, and many of their skills and ways of life are based around teachings from all of that history.
Amazing Products
One thing which you can guarantee in these places is that the quality of the handmade products are going to be exceptional. From pottery to jewelry, these men and women use crafts to create some truly delightful stuff and I can guarantee that if you go to a PM then you are going to be sure to find a real haul of products to take home with you.
Food Options
The food which you are going to find in these places is simply spectacular. Usually you are going to find a pretty simple range of cuisine, but it is the preparation and the ingredients which are used here which makes the meals so different. To begin with most of the ingredients are from the local area which means that they are tasty and fresh. In terms of the cooking process, much like the products, the techniques which they use to prepare and cook food has been passed on through generations. If you want some truly authentic Mexican cooking then this is exactly where you are going to find it.
Hidden Away
One of the biggest reasons why I love this kind of trip is that the Pueblos Magicos are often in areas of the country which are hidden away. This means that you are going to be visiting places which are in the middle of natural splendor. Not only this however, it also means that you are going to be discovering places which you would probably not have visited were it not a Pueblo Magico. Through this program there is a lot more reason to discover so many more areas of the country.
You can find a list of these towns and villages on the Mexican government website, there is a broad range to choose from and no matter where you are the country, you will not be far from a Pueblo Magico.
