With many Americans struggling to make ends meet and rise above the low-income waters, it is increasingly difficult to keep up with expensive housing costs. Thankfully, the government of the USA has provided citizens and residents with more affordable housing assistance.
The American Hope Resources shared with us how to qualify for low-income housing programs in an interview below.
How Do You Qualify For Low-Income Housing Programs?
To qualify for low-income housing programs, you need to earn a certain income established by the Department for Housing and Urban Development. This will first be looked into and verified when you apply for housing assistance.
To qualify for the government-funded programs, you have to prove that you are either a legal resident or a citizen of the USA.
They will also conduct an eligibility interview to verify the information you’ll provide.
Due to the high number of people who apply for these programs, there is usually a long waiting list, so you might have to wait before you get the assistance you need.
What Is Regarded As Low-Income In The United States of America?
A low-income family earns 80% of the State’s median family income. Families with incomes below 200% of the federal poverty threshold of $52,492 for two adults and two related children are usually classified as low-income.
How Do You Apply For Housing Assistance?
When applying for housing assistance, you need first to confirm your eligibility. At American Hope Resources, we encourage you to check through the HUD criteria to see if you qualify. The next step is contacting your Local Housing Authority, which is responsible for operating your area’s public housing programs.
Some require you to make a physical appointment, while others allow you to apply online. You are then to fill out a written application that might require information about your household, income, and employment. You can mail this application or take it to the Local Housing Authority in person, but it might get attended to faster if you make an appointment and deliver it in person.
Next, you need to gather the necessary documents to support your application. These include; birth certificates, bank statements, tax returns, pay stubs, marriage certificates or divorce decrees, Proof of citizenship or legal residency, verification from your employer, etc.
Lastly, you need to wait for feedback from the local housing authority on their decision. You can then proceed to sign your lease and pay the required security deposit, if necessary.
What Are The Available Low-Income Housing Programs?
Some of the government-funded low-income housing programs available in the USA include; Low Income Housing Tax Credit, National Housing Trust Fund, Tenant-based rental assistance programs, Capital Magnet Fund, Project-based rental assistance programs, Public Housing operating fund and capital fund, Rural Housing Service programs, Choice Neighborhoods, Home Investment Partnerships Program, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), and Qualified Opportunity Zone Designations.
How Do You Get Emergency Housing Assistance?
If you need Emergency housing for any reason, such as eviction, call your local housing authority by dialing 211 or search online via the Housing and Urban Development’s Find Shelter tool.
